Device-free GPU plans can fail when hardware facts leak into them

By OnTheRice · Sources and limitations · Report a correction

TensorFlow/XLA found that a GPU plan built without a device could later fail on B200 hardware. With CUDA 13.4 or newer, the plan stored an oversized shared-memory value for every GPU, while cuDNN expected zero on non-SM10.7 devices and rejected the plan. The fix now records that value only for SM10.7. This shows why portable plans must keep device-only facts separate. The change is still unreleased, and some added tests were not run. What’s changing?

A device-free plan is supposed to stay portable. If it stores a hardware-only shared-memory value, cuDNN can compare that stale assumption with the live GPU and reject the plan before execution.

Key points

  • TensorFlow/XLA commit 55dcf9c50a927d36279119e33fd0471870a29b78 says CUDA 13.4 and newer could record a non-zero oversized shared-memory value in a device-free plan for every GPU. cuDNN could later compare it with a live non-SM10.7 value of zero and reject all autotuning candidates on B200.
  • The fix reports the shared-memory attribute only for SM10.7 and uses zero elsewhere. It also widens tests for more cuDNN frontend JSON layouts.
  • The commit records that some added FileCheck and executor tests were not run. NVIDIA documents the reported architecture-mismatch status as a requested feature being absent from the current GPU device.

What could change this view?

  • This is an unreleased main-branch fix, not proof of broad user impact. The commit describes a bounded cuDNN/XLA path, and some added tests were not run.

Bottom line

The fix narrows one compatibility boundary for B200 execution and gives runtime teams a concrete audit target: every serialized device property in plans built without a device.

Directional takeaway: N/A. This is an engineering compatibility signal, not an investible call. NO ENTRY.

OTR reasoning: A device-free plan is supposed to stay portable. If it stores a hardware-only shared-memory value, cuDNN can compare that stale assumption with the live GPU and reject the plan before execution.

Counterpoint: This is an unreleased main-branch fix, not proof of broad user impact. The commit describes a bounded cuDNN/XLA path, and some added tests were not run.
