Singapore’s 5 October haze readings make location and timing matter
By OnTheRice · Sources and limitations · Report a correction
NEA’s 5 October, 7pm SGT snapshot put 24-hour PSI at 97–124 and 1-hour PM2.5 at 72–109 µg/m³. These dated readings extend Sunday’s brief central dip. Outdoor plans need the latest local reading and forecast, rather than treating an earlier range as live.

What’s changing?
The same episode has moved beyond Sunday’s two snapshots. Decisions need a fresh local exposure reading and forecast, even when a previous regional reading briefly fell below the unhealthy threshold.
Key points
- NEA reported 24-hour PSI 97–124 and 1-hour PM2.5 72–109 µg/m³ at 7pm SGT on 5 October.
- It saw smoke drifting from southern Sumatra and forecast high-moderate to mid-unhealthy PSI. Cloud cover limited the satellite picture.
What could change this view?
- These are dated snapshots, not proof of continuous exposure, nationwide unhealthy PSI or conditions at the moment a reader opens the page.

Original research record
The earlier Sunday report recorded central PSI at 101 at 9pm and 99 at 11pm. On Monday, 5 October, MSS reported 1-hour PM2.5 of 75–97 µg/m³ and 24-hour PSI of 94–122 at 6pm SGT.
At 7pm, NEA reported 1-hour PM2.5 of 72–109 µg/m³ and 24-hour PSI of 97–124. An 8world report attributed central/west/east PSI of 124/121/104 and north/south PSI of 97 to NEA at that same 7pm measurement.
The official NEA advisory corroborates that 7pm range and forecasts high-moderate to mid-unhealthy PSI. It adds source confirmation, not a later measurement.
OTR’s view: location, measurement time and averaging period govern the decision. These snapshots do not show continuous exposure or nationwide unhealthy PSI.
For immediate outdoor activity, follow NEA’s current 1-hour PM2.5 guide; use its latest 24-hour PSI forecast to plan the next day. The 5 October evening readings are historical, not current conditions.
Watch the next clocked official local readings. Sustained improvement would reduce the immediate caution; fresh deterioration would strengthen it.

What changed
Recorded public historySingapore’s 5 October haze readings extended the episode. Local readings and their dates matter.
- A brief central PSI crossing sits between two moderate readings
Sunday night’s haze produced a narrow threshold crossing in central Singapore: CNA reported 24-hour PSI 101 at 9pm on 4 October, then 99 at 11pm, while the other four regions stayed moderate. This is evidence from two snapshots, not a continuous exposure measure or nationwide unhealthy air. NEA’s 5pm advisory forecast Monday in the high-moderate to low-unhealthy range. For immediate outdoor activity, NEA says to check 1-hour PM2.5; use the next-day PSI forecast for planning. Next check: NEA’s next regional readings.
