OTR EMERGING DATA
The next feed battle is over the right to leave the algorithm
By OnTheRice · Sources and limitations · Report a correction
Start with the main idea: what may be changing, how the clues connect, and what remains uncertain.
We see two different kinds of control arriving together. Facebook lets people describe what they want to see. Australia is consulting on a choice between recommended and following-only feeds. Reddit is also testing separate For You and Following feeds. Our emerging view is that better recommendations and a real exit from recommendations are becoming separate product tests. A feed may learn our tastes while still keeping us inside its chosen flow. The useful question is simple: can we change the route, or only the scenery?
We would separate the test into three parts: can people find the setting, does the choice survive a fresh session, and does it change what they actually return to read? For a small publisher, this matters because an interested follower and a passing recommendation are not the same relationship. Clear titles and a recognisable subject can help readers choose deliberately. We cannot yet tell which feed design will win.
The idea, step by step
Follow the reasoning from the observations to the proposed result. A possible link is not proof.
First, a person tells a system what interests them. Next, we test whether it changes the posts shown. Then we compare that with choosing only followed accounts. These are different actions and should be measured separately.
Research context
Understand the background and earlier comparisons, including the differences that matter.
The Facebook and Reddit changes are announced products or experiments. The Australian item is a draft consultation. We assign 70% subjective confidence to the distinction being useful; we have no measured adoption rate.
The key clues
See the main observations behind the idea, with their important qualifications.
Typed interests, a proposed following-only choice and Reddit’s split-feed test point towards user control. None establishes that people spend less time online.
What could change this view?
See what could change this interpretation and what still needs to be checked.
Low adoption, confusing defaults or the withdrawal of the proposed Australian rules would weaken the practical impact.
What this means
Read the takeaway and the limits that matter before drawing a conclusion.
Readers can compare recommendation controls with a following-only view. Publishers should check where returning readers actually come from.
Evidence behind this view
Review the information supporting this view and the limits on what it can show.
Three separate organisations describe changes to how a feed is chosen. OTR’s earlier algorithm record supplies the baseline, not an extra independent announcement.
Evidence against this view
Check the opposing evidence and other explanations that could weaken this view.
Convenient recommendations can remain popular. Control may improve trust without changing behaviour.
What people say vs the facts
Compare what people say with the observations, without treating attention as proof.
“More control” is a product claim. Whether people can find and use the choice is an outcome still to measure.
What’s changing?
Follow the reasoning from the observations to the proposed result. A possible link is not proof.
The competition is widening from accurate ranking to understandable choice.

OTR reasoning · Why we see this connection
Follow the reasoning from the observations to the proposed result. A possible link is not proof.
A usable alternative can reveal a preference that a click alone cannot show. This is our inference, not a reported retention result.
Counterpoint · Another possible explanation
Check the opposing evidence and other explanations that could weaken this view.
A following-only feed may feel less useful when people follow too few accounts.
What changed
