OTR EMERGING DATA

Your listening feed can change while the public conversation stays the same

By OnTheRice · Sources and limitations · Report a correction

Start with the main idea: what may be changing, how the clues connect, and what remains uncertain.

Facebook announced plain-language recommendation controls on 13 October. The current Five Desk report explains the feature as a publishing consideration. OTR's different question is about measurement: if a researcher changes the topics shown in a feed, the resulting sample changes too. A quieter topic in that feed may reflect the observer's settings rather than a quieter public conversation. No test here establishes that a particular topic has gained or lost public support.

A separate June announcement said Meta would also use activity shared by other businesses to personalise non-ad content. The page carries 8 and 9 June dates. That adds another documented selection input; it does not establish which input shaped any observed post.

This connects the platform announcement with the Omega report's warning about a small, selected Reddit sample and the World Memory rule to preserve missing information. The causal step is selection. People see a ranked subset of available material. A setting can change which material enters that subset. Counting posts after the change without recording the change can create an artificial trend.

This risk applies even when every visible post is real and correctly quoted. The mistake lies in comparing different observation processes as though they were the same.

Community researchers, brand teams and journalists should keep a simple observation log. Record the account or public route, topic settings, language, country, sampling time and whether ranking was personalised. Where permitted, compare a stable public search or fixed source list alongside the feed. A disagreement is a reason to investigate selection, not proof of censorship or manipulation. OTR should avoid describing a deliberately tuned research feed as a representative survey.

Within 24 hours, a researcher could set up a private, consented inspection using two available accounts with documented settings, without posting anything. Inspect the first 30 eligible recommendations at the same two times. Classify only the visible subject, source and date. The proposed outcome is topic overlap and source overlap, with 30 as the per-inspection denominator. Do not count repeated inspections as different people.

If controls are unavailable on either account, report the rollout limitation. A fixed source list supplies a comparison, but it is also selected and must carry its own scope.

The strongest opposing explanations is that the visible differences remain small or unstable because other ranking signals dominate. That would weaken a claim that the new control materially changes a researcher's sample. The two accounts may also differ in long-standing history, making attribution difficult. The experiment therefore diagnoses comparability rather than estimating a causal platform-wide effect. A stronger follow-up would repeat a documented setting change within the same account while holding the observation clock and topic rules as steady as possible.

What next matters to every later sentiment claim. Save the settings with the observations, and mark a break in the series when the collection method changes. Never join the two periods into one growth chart without explaining the break. If the measured sample moves while the fixed source comparison does not, investigate the collection system before writing a social trend.

This is a new measurement-selection signal, separate from advice to improve topic fit. The immediate gain is a more honest account of what OTR could see, rather than a stronger claim about what everyone thinks.

The mechanism is selection: a different window can create a different picture of the same world.

OnTheRice’s Emerging Data

This connects the platform announcement with the Omega report's warning about a small, selected Reddit sample and the World Memory rule to preserve missingness. The causal step is selection.

The strongest countercase is that the visible differences remain small or unstable because other ranking signals dominate. That would weaken a claim that the new control materially changes a researcher's sample. The two accounts may also differ in long-standing history, making attribution difficult. The experiment therefore diagnoses comparability rather than estimating a causal platform-wide effect. Asset or investible
Something that can be bought or sold, such as a share, bond, fund, currency or cryptocurrency.
Horizon or deadline
The forecast time window. A saved deadline states when the outcome should be checked.
Probability
An estimate of how likely an outcome is. For example, 60% means about six chances in ten, not certainty.
Uncalibrated estimate
A judgement that has not been shown to match real outcomes reliably. It is not a proven success rate.
Calibration
Checking whether stated chances match real results across many forecasts. An estimate can still be untested.
Historical analogue
A similar past situation used for comparison. It does not prove today’s event will have the same result.
Bayesian framework
Updating an earlier belief with new evidence. A posterior is the updated estimate; a likelihood ratio compares how evidence fits outcomes. A subjective estimate may have no tested calculation.
De Finetti framework
Keeping probability judgements consistent. Related calls may share evidence, so one story must not count as several independent reasons.
Kolmogorov framework
Basic probability rules: chances cannot be negative, and separate possible outcomes together total 100%.

UTC is a world time standard. SGT is Singapore time, eight hours ahead of UTC.
