OTR EMERGING DATA
Gold’s larger vault holdings are failing to lift the next bid
Start with the main idea: what may be changing, how the clues connect, and what remains uncertain.
We see two gold stories moving on different clocks. Investors added physical gold through funds in September, yet GLD’s recent price remains weak. The newest buyer and seller still decide that price.
At the same time, the funds’ combined dollar value fell because gold became cheaper. This is useful evidence against a simple rule that more fund buying must immediately lift gold. It is monthly evidence, however. We do not present it as a fresh reading of October’s daily demand.
The next layer is the competition between protection and income. September’s higher US inflation can strengthen demand for a store of value, but it can also increase concern about interest-rate increases. Gold pays no interest. Importantly, the latest Federal Reserve rate table does not show a recent rise in real yields: its ten-year inflation-linked yield fell from 2.91% on 9 October to 2.78% on 15 October.
The price has not shown a convincing recovery despite those supportive forces. The OTR data’s lesson is to separate a durable ownership trend from the short window being predicted. Falling yields and past monthly buying may support a floor; neither has yet established an upward turn.
A fuller vault is support to investigate, not a promise about the next bid.

- Friday high US$384.86; low US$380.94. Sponsor’s annual expense ratio is 0.40%; the price call excludes fees and trading costs.
What could change this view?
See what could change this interpretation and what still needs to be checked.
- Lower real yields, substantial September fund purchases and a possible flight to safety favour a rebound. Current October daily physical holdings were not independently verified.

Terms in simple English
Find plain meanings for the specialist terms used in this research.
Asset or investible
Something that can be bought or sold, such as a share, bond, fund, currency or cryptocurrency.
Share or equity
A share is a small ownership stake in a company. Its price can rise or fall.
Entry or reference price
A reference quote is not proof that a trade could be made at that price.
Horizon or deadline
The forecast time window. A saved deadline states when the outcome should be checked.
HIT and MISS
MISS means it did not meet those rules. These labels do not measure profit after trading costs.
Unverifiable
The outcome could not be confirmed with evidence matching the saved rules. It is not a confirmed win or loss.
Estimates whose accuracy has not been established by testing
A judgement that has not been shown to match real outcomes reliably. It is not a proven success rate.
Calibration
Checking whether stated chances match real results across many forecasts. An estimate can still be untested.
Valuation
What investors think an asset or company is worth, compared with measures such as sales, profit or cash flow.
Dividend
Money a company pays shareholders. The payment can change or stop.
Bond
A loan investors make to a government or company. The borrower promises payments under its terms.
Bond yield
The return implied by a bond’s current price and payments.
Yield
A return shown as a rate. Bond returns, dividend payments and crypto rewards are different things. Manufacturing yield means usable output instead.
Real yield
Yield after allowing for inflation under the stated measure. It may use expected rather than already-recorded inflation.
Liquidity
How easily an asset can be traded without sharply moving its price. For a company, it can mean access to cash for bills.
ETF
An exchange-traded fund: a basket of investments traded on an exchange like a share.
Exchange or venue
The market or trading platform supplying a quote. NASDAQ and NYSE are US exchanges; SGX is Singapore Exchange. Prices can differ by venue.
Volatility
How widely and quickly prices move.
Capital flows or rotation
Money moving into or out of investments. Rotation means shifting money between sectors or assets.
Issuer
The company, government or organisation issuing a security. Evidence about one issuer may not apply to others in its sector.
Inventory
Goods or materials held in stock. Too much can tie up cash; too little can limit sales.
Inflation
A rise in general prices. Slower inflation means slower price rises, not necessarily falling prices.
CPI
Consumer Price Index, a measure of price changes paid by consumers.
Check of how evidence affects the estimate
Updating an earlier belief with new evidence. A posterior is the updated estimate; a likelihood ratio compares how evidence fits outcomes. A estimate based on judgement may have no tested calculation.
Check of whether comparisons and shared evidence are suitable
Related calls may share evidence, so one story must not count as several independent reasons.
Test on examples kept separate from model building
Checking examples not used to build or tune the method. It helps show whether performance extends beyond training examples.
Test of returns after trading costs
Checking returns after fees, buying–selling price gaps and differences between quoted and actual trade prices.
UTC and SGT
UTC is a world time standard. SGT is Singapore time, eight hours ahead of UTC.
Median
The middle value when observations are put in order. Half lie at or below it and half at or above it; it is not a promised future result.
GLD holds physical gold through a trust. Real yield is a bond yield after its inflation adjustment.
Gold provides no contractual interest income.
