OTR EMERGING DATA
TSMC’s next chip generation is charging its costs before its rewards
Start with the main idea: what may be changing, how the clues connect, and what remains uncertain.
We see a timing problem inside TSMC’s strong growth. Customers want its newest chips, but bringing that production into service takes money before the full benefit reaches profit. The emerging connection is between a successful technology ramp and a temporarily smaller share of revenue becoming earnings. Strong demand and a weak share price can therefore coexist.
TSMC reported US$46.72 billion in third-quarter revenue and guided to another increase next quarter. Its earnings discussion also identified a less comfortable detail: the two-nanometre production ramp was the main reason share of sales left after direct production costs fell by 1.3 percentage points from the previous quarter. Management expects continued ramp costs and overseas factory costs to affect the following quarter. These are planned expansion costs, not proof of cancelled orders.
The OTR data separates the stages of the AI spending chain. A chip customer’s expansion plan, a foundry’s production cost and a cloud operator’s financing risk are different exposures. We apply that lesson here. More advanced manufacturing can strengthen TSMC’s long-term position while making near-term profit comparisons less exciting.
Friday’s ADR decline and a roughly 9% fall over five sessions support that near-term concern. They do not prove our explanation caused the selling. Broad technology weakness is an alternative. The strongest opposing evidence remains substantial: guidance points higher, cash generation is strong and official US industrial data show semiconductor output expanding. Our eight historical chart matches split evenly between rising and falling outcomes.
This is a modest price forecast, not a call that the chip cycle has ended. The test is Tuesday’s US regular close. The next generation may win the orders before it wins the margin.

- Friday ADR high US$421.50; low US$410.58. No automatic break or rebound is assumed.
What could change this view?
See what could change this interpretation and what still needs to be checked.
The eight chart matches offer no directional majority.
Applying the issuer guidance midpoint to share of sales left after direct production costs implies roughly13.4% higher dollar gross profit than Q3, despite a lower margin percentage. Pressure on profit per sale is already public news, so novelty lies only in the forward price test, not discovering that cost issue first.

Terms in simple English
Find plain meanings for the specialist terms used in this research.
Asset or investible
Something that can be bought or sold, such as a share, bond, fund, currency or cryptocurrency.
Share or equity
A share is a small ownership stake in a company. Its price can rise or fall.
Entry or reference price
A reference quote is not proof that a trade could be made at that price.
Horizon or deadline
The forecast time window. A saved deadline states when the outcome should be checked.
HIT and MISS
MISS means it did not meet those rules. These labels do not measure profit after trading costs.
Unverifiable
The outcome could not be confirmed with evidence matching the saved rules. It is not a confirmed win or loss.
Estimates whose accuracy has not been established by testing
A judgement that has not been shown to match real outcomes reliably. It is not a proven success rate.
Calibration
Checking whether stated chances match real results across many forecasts. An estimate can still be untested.
Revenue
Money earned from sales before subtracting costs.
Earnings or net income
A company’s profit after its costs. Earnings reports show how much it made or lost.
Margin
Profit compared with sales after the stated costs. A lower share of sales kept as profit means less profit from each dollar of sales.
Margin in context
A business margin compares revenue with stated costs; it may be a percentage or profit per unit, such as dollars per barrel. For a leveraged trade, margin means money required to support the position. Check the stated measure.
Share of sales left after direct production costs
The share of sales left after direct product costs, before other running costs.
Guidance or outlook
Management’s forecast for future sales, profit or other results. It can change.
Valuation
What investors think an asset or company is worth, compared with measures such as sales, profit or cash flow.
Dividend
Money a company pays shareholders. The payment can change or stop.
Hundredth of a percentage point (bp or bps)
One hundredth of a percentage point is 0.01 percentage point. A move of 25 hundredths of a percentage point equals 0.25 percentage point.
Percentage point
The gap between two percentages. A rise from 4% to 5% is one percentage point, a 25% rise in the original rate.
Liquidity
How easily an asset can be traded without sharply moving its price. For a company, it can mean access to cash for bills.
ADR
An American depositary receipt: a US-traded certificate representing shares in an overseas company.
Exchange or venue
The market or trading platform supplying a quote. NASDAQ and NYSE are US exchanges; SGX is Singapore Exchange. Prices can differ by venue.
Volatility
How widely and quickly prices move.
Issuer
The company, government or organisation issuing a security. Evidence about one issuer may not apply to others in its sector.
Inventory
Goods or materials held in stock. Too much can tie up cash; too little can limit sales.
Quarter (Q1 to Q4)
A three-month reporting period. Company financial years can start in different months.
SEC or MAS
SEC is the US Securities and Exchange Commission. MAS is Singapore’s central bank and financial regulator.
Foundry or advanced node
A foundry makes chips designed by other companies. An advanced node is a newer chip-making process. Greater factory use spreads fixed costs over more chips.
Check of how evidence affects the estimate
Updating an earlier belief with new evidence. A posterior is the updated estimate; a likelihood ratio compares how evidence fits outcomes. A estimate based on judgement may have no tested calculation.
Check of whether comparisons and shared evidence are suitable
Related calls may share evidence, so one story must not count as several independent reasons.
Test on examples kept separate from model building
Checking examples not used to build or tune the method. It helps show whether performance extends beyond training examples.
AI or machine learning
Software learning patterns from examples to perform tasks. Its output can be wrong.
UTC and SGT
UTC is a world time standard. SGT is Singapore time, eight hours ahead of UTC.
Median
The middle value when observations are put in order. Half lie at or below it and half at or above it; it is not a promised future result.
Share of sales left after direct production costs is revenue left after production costs. One percentage point equals 100 hundredths of a percentage point.
An ADR is a US-listed receipt representing foreign shares.
